Does Culture eat strategy for breakfast?

It's fascinating how quotes can take on a life of their own. It turns out Peter Drucker didn't say "Culture eats strategy for breakfast," however his insights on the importance of culture in organizations are still incredibly valuable. What he said in his article for the Wall Street Journal (March 28,1991) was “culture—no matter how defined—is singularly persistent.” It’s persistent, alongside strategy.

Culture matters—a lot. It's not just about having a snazzy mission statement or a set of values printed on a poster in the office. It's about the day-to-day interactions, how the leaders live the values, the shared beliefs, and the way things get done around your organization. And as your company grows, nurturing that culture becomes increasingly crucial alongside your strategic plans.

If you want to build a successful organization, you can’t have one without the other. While strategy provides the roadmap, culture sets the tone for how you'll navigate that roadmap. They're inextricably linked, each influencing and shaping the other in a continuous feedback loop.

How can we nurture both?

At Yperia Group we think, first of all, you need to make sure everyone's on the same page. Clearly defining your company's values and mission is essential. This isn't just about paying lip service to ideals; it's about providing a roadmap for your team. When everyone knows what they're working towards and why it matters, it's much easier to keep that culture alive and kicking.

Next up, let's lead by example. Remember what Drucker said about culture being persistent? As leaders, our actions speak volumes. If we want a culture of openness, collaboration, and respect, we've got to embody those qualities ourselves. Our behavior sets the tone for the entire organization, so let's make sure it's a tone we're proud of.

But here's the thing: culture isn't something you can just set and forget. You have to nourish it regularly if you want it to flourish. That means fostering open communication, celebrating wins and being willing to course-correct when things start to veer off track.

And let's not forget about diversity. Remember, it's not just about ticking boxes or meeting quotas, you need to have the right people in the right roles embracing different perspectives and experiences. A diverse team provides you with richer ideas to draw from, unique thinking and a better overall company culture.

We think culture and strategy are your dynamic duo. Let Yperia Group help you to nurture them both, cherish their symbiotic relationship, and watch your company thrive as a result. When you have a strong culture and a solid strategy working hand in hand, there's no limit to what you can achieve.
